Amanda Holloway: Behind the March Cover

It was back in late August of last year that a simple, two line email arrived in our inbox from Senior Photographer Amanda Holloway. It read (in part), I was wondering if you were looking for anything editorial or senior related? I have a few ideas in mind Amanda had long been on our list of photographers to reach out to for a possible interview with and her timing was impeccable. After a short series of emails we lined Amanda up for the March 2014 cover and had her interview date on the books. To say that we were excited to have Amandas work gracing our cover is an understatement. But what the cover would evolve into was something none of us could predict. Shes simply one of the best in the industry, a class above the rest. Amanda works extremely hard and yet is very humble. Shes always interested in whats best for the team rather than just her as an individual.

We sat down in mid-October for her interview and started the cover conversation. Often we select a previously shot, yet unpublished, image from our feature photographer. But this case was different. Amanda was in the process of finalizing her new studio space and was wanting to add to her editorial portfolio. We were looking for something strong yet feminine and complex yet still clear. It meant one thing- a new shoot had to take place. We spent the better part of a morning discussing concepts that the image should portray- mood, tone, feel, expression, message. In the end, we left it to Amanda to create her masterpiece. She truly did not disappoint.

In January, Amanda gathered her team in Houston for the multi-day shoot alongside a Hair/Makeup Artist and Cinematographer Ale Vidal of Imaginale Design. Meanwhile, the Denim+Grace team here in New Jersey was hard at work pulling some of the best in the senior niche market together to create our March 2014 Senior Issue.

Whats resulted is a first of its kind video for our industry and an amazing testimony to what passionate collaborations can achieve. A true behind the scenes look at the execution of our photo shoot concept by Amanda Holloway and her team through the design process and final product of a cover layout by our team here at Denim+Grace Magazine. For more, including the entire shoot pictorial and Amandas interview, pick up the March issue of Denim+Grace Magazine, on sale 3/1.

A personal thanks from Heather: Words cannot even begin to express our, and my personal, gratitude. Amanda, you embodied the spirit of the Denim+Grace brand and gave us the ultimate photographic voice all while expressing your aesthetic style and technical excellence. I am so grateful to dream BIG dreams beside you. Ale, your campaign work brings our concept to an unparalleled level. You made the final product such a beautifully collaborative piece with all three of our personalities present. Denim+Grace Magazine is honored to be a part of this collaboration and I feel truly blessed to have this image as our March 2014 cover. Many thanks also to Associate Editor Katie Bergin for being my rock and sounding board, as well as AHP and D+G teams for all of your hard work and dedication on this project! And finally a special thanks to Vickie Black of Senior Style Guide for introducing Amanda and I to each other and being an amazingly dedicated colleague to our industry.

2014 BEST OF IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHERS

BestImagesAwarded

We are so incredibly excited to announce the awardees for our first annual Best of Images Contest! Our judges critiqued 729 images submitted across 5 categories (Boudoir, Child, Newborn, Senior and Wedding) through a numbered system, ensuring no judge was aware of the submitting artists name and could judge impartially. Each judge individually scored each image on the following criteria:

FIRST IMPRESSION

Quick, first glance impression of the image.

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

Evaluation of techincal excellence of image. Includes proper exposure, well proportioned composition, and pleasing white balance.

VISUAL EXPRESSION

Evaluation on use of light, choice of location, posing, styling and and aesthetically pleasing composition to visually express the subject matter.

EDITING PROFICIENCY

Evaluation of editing proficiency to enhance the aesthetic appearance or better express the subject matter.

Each of their scores were tallied to reveal each images final score. The Top 25 images in each category, all with an overall score of 70 or higher, were awarded placement within the issue. (The Boudoir Category will be published with 12 images as the balance of images did not meet the score requirement.) In addition, our Editor-in-Chief, Heather Tindall, hand selected 2 images from each category to be awarded in a 6th category aptly named, the Editors Choice Award.

Words cannot express the thanks that we have for our judges, Vickie Black of Senior Style Guide Magazine, Brittni Schroeder of Mozi Magazine and Jessica Klaus of Beyond the Wanderlust. These editors gave their time and skill to us as judges and were so thankful for their time and effort!

The winning images will be published in the December 2014 issue of Denim+Grace Magazine releasing on December 15, 2014! So, in anticipation of the issue launch, here are the awarded photographers in alphabetical order based on category:
